Babu Owino Fights Back: Promises to Challenge Court’s Ruling on Njiru Land Eviction

In a determined stand against the recent court decision allowing the Kirima family to evict more than a thousand squatters from their Njiru farm, Babu Owino, the prominent figure of Embakasi East, has declared his intention to appeal the ruling.

Expressing his concerns on Thursday, Babu Owino stressed the urgency of filing an appeal to safeguard the rights of the residents. “The first step is to file an appeal; I have already coordinated with our legal team, and we will proceed with the appeal process. This is essential for the residents to find peace and enjoy their holidays,” he affirmed.

Addressing the media, Owino emphasized that the move was not driven by political motives but rather his responsibility as a leader. He outlined his strategy, stating, “The Kirima family can engage in negotiations while the appeal is underway. Negotiation is what the residents desire, and that’s what we aim to achieve.”

Owino expressed his frustration with the protracted legal battle, highlighting, “This case has lingered in the courts for nine years. If it takes another nine years in the Court of Appeal and then an additional nine in the Supreme Court, we will have 18 years to strategize and negotiate.”

The court ruling, handed down by Environment and Land Judge Samson Okong’o, recognized Kirima as the rightful owner of the disputed property, granting the squatters until December 31st to vacate the land. Owino revealed plans to obtain a stay order through the appeal process, preventing the imminent eviction deadline.

Furthermore, the judge allotted a 90-day window for a specific group to acquire portions of the property directly from the estate administrators, Teresia Wairimu Kirima and Anne Wangari Kirima, Kirima’s widow, and daughter, respectively.

Babu Owino’s vow to contest this decision echoes the sentiments of the affected residents, who now look to the legal system for a fair resolution amidst these challenging circumstances.
