In a pivotal move to sustain the momentum of the Azimio-Kenya Kwanza talks, the Bipartisan Talks Committee convened with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula on Wednesday to discuss securing financial support for their crucial mission.
The meeting, spanning an hour, was attended by prominent figures, including Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, and EALA MP Hassan Omar. Kalonzo Musyoka, arriving at Parliament around 11:30 am, greeted fellow parliamentarians with a warm handshake before proceeding to the Speaker’s office.
Sources close to the committee reveal that the Bipartisan Committee has been grappling with a dire shortage of funding, hampering its progress and effectiveness. Despite both houses of Parliament passing a motion to formalize the Bipartisan Committee’s role in the legislative framework, the Parliamentary Commission neglected to allocate any financial resources to support its critical mission.
The committee has embarked on a mission to persuade the Speaker to allocate a budget to support their efforts, although the exact financial requirements remain undisclosed. The move raises questions about the potential financial burden on Kenyan taxpayers.
The technical committee had scheduled meetings for Wednesday and Friday to meticulously review 142 memoranda before the Bipartisan Talks Committee reconvenes on Monday to delve into the agreed-upon agenda. These developments transpire amidst mounting speculations that one faction within the coalition is obstructing progress, with Azimio One Kenya Coalition party leader Raila Odinga expected to make a significant announcement regarding the way forward.
The initial plan of the talks team was to wrap up their work within 60 days. Still, as two weeks have passed with minimal progress, the urgency to secure funding for their endeavors becomes increasingly evident.
