Education Ministry Fails to Enforce National School Uniform Standardization Proposal

In a disappointing turn of events, the Ministry of Education has failed to implement a crucial proposal endorsed by the National Assembly regarding standardized school uniforms.

Despite the parliamentary motion passing successfully, the Education Ministry, under the leadership of Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, has neglected to establish a uniform policy nationwide.

The proposal, put forth by dedicated members of the National Assembly, aimed to institute a standardized uniform policy across the entire country.

However, Secretary Machogu informed the assembly that the ministry had merely issued a circular to schools, suggesting that parents should purchase uniforms according to their financial capabilities.

The soaring costs associated with acquiring school uniforms have been a significant concern, contributing to the overall financial burden on parents and guardians. Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba emphasized the necessity for the government to create an affordable legal framework, enabling trained tailors to produce uniforms for children.

Despite the motion gaining approval earlier in the year and landing on Secretary Machogu’s desk for execution, little progress has been made. As the academic year draws to a close and a new one approaches, parents and guardians are left unprotected from the burden of expensive uniform costs.

The motion advocated for uniformity in school attire, to be implemented at various levels of education, either at the sub-county, county, or national level.

Additionally, it proposed fixing the uniform prices to eradicate the alleged collusion between uniform distributors and school administrators, resulting in inflated costs for parents.

Secretary Machogu defended the ministry’s stance, stating that altering school uniform styles could create challenges due to the sense of belonging it fosters among students.

However, MP Wamuchomba and other lawmakers remain adamant about the urgent need for a standardized policy. They stress that such a policy is essential to curb the influence of school heads in dictating uniform choices and costs.

Furthermore, the formulation of a comprehensive uniform policy for all educational levels was a key recommendation of the Presidential Working Party on education reforms. The lawmakers remain resolute in their determination, pledging to persist until the Ministry of Education addresses the pressing issue of exorbitant school uniform costs.
