In a momentous victory, renowned marathoner Eliud Kipchoge has clinched the prestigious 2023 Princess of Asturias Award in the sports category.
A panel of 15 judges from the foundation hailed Kipchoge as a true legend in the realm of athletics, his accomplishments unparalleled. They specifically highlighted his incredible feat in 2019 when he completed a marathon in under 2 hours, although this remarkable achievement was not officially acknowledged.
Kipchoge’s track record is nothing short of extraordinary, with 16 victories out of 18 marathons, including four wins each in illustrious events like the London and Berlin marathons.
“The Jury recognized the athlete’s influence as a global role model in athletics and hailed him as the finest marathon runner in history.
A two-time Olympic champion and the current world record holder for the marathon, Kipchoge remains the sole individual to have covered the daunting 42.195 kilometers in under two hours, a feat yet to be formally acknowledged,” stated the judges in their official statement.
Beyond his athletic prowess, Kipchoge received accolades for his impactful social initiatives through the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation. This organization plays a pivotal role in providing access to early childhood education and advocating for environmental preservation.
Speaking to the international media in Spain, where he graciously accepted the award, Kipchoge expressed his enthusiasm at being recognized alongside exceptional individuals from diverse fields.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Princess of Asturias Award. To be counted among extraordinary laureates, individuals from various walks of life, is incredibly motivating. This recognition fuels my mission to leave a lasting legacy in this world through running, for a world that runs is one that embraces peace, happiness, and good health,” he shared passionately.
The Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony, designed to celebrate exceptional achievements in areas ranging from science and technology to culture, sports, and humanitarian work, is set to take place in Oviedo, Spain, on Friday, October 20.
