In a startling turn of events, former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was released by his presumed captors after an agonizing 24-hour ordeal. Njenga found himself unceremoniously abandoned in Limuru, Kiambu County, around 10:15 pm on Sunday, with his abductors even providing him with transportation fare.
After his unexpected release, Njenga wasted no time and promptly embarked on a motorcycle journey back to his residence in Banana, the very place from which he had been forcibly taken on Saturday night. Only upon reaching the safety of his home did he reach out to his legal counsel and family to share the news of his newfound freedom.
His attorney, Ndegwa Njiru, confirmed the release and pointed an accusatory finger at law enforcement, alleging their involvement in the kidnapping. The incident itself had unfolded in the Banana area of Kiambu on Saturday night, with the underlying motives remaining shrouded in mystery.
Njenga’s immediate future involves a scheduled appearance in Makadara court on Monday for preliminary proceedings related to his case. Curiously, the police have maintained a conspicuous silence regarding the incident, leaving many questions unanswered. Our attempts to reach Kiambu police boss Perminus Kioi for comment went unanswered.
This episode is not the first time Njenga has found himself embroiled in dramatic circumstances. In May, he was apprehended at his father’s residence in Kiserian, enduring days of detention before facing legal proceedings. Eventually, he was granted bail at a cost of Sh200,000, with charges stemming from his alleged involvement in orchestrating anti-government protests.
Adding to his tumultuous year, Njenga made headlines in May due to police raids at his residences in Nairobi, Nakuru, and Laikipia counties. These operations followed allegations of weapon recoveries from his Nakuru abode, a discovery made on May 12 during a police raid in Ngomongo village, Bahati, Nakuru.
