In a startling turn of events, the tranquil town of Ongata Rongai finds itself embroiled in controversy as detectives delve into a disturbing case involving a local police officer accused of inflicting a grievous eye injury upon a suspect. Moses Karathe, alongside two others, was apprehended, but his arrest took a harrowing turn when he allegedly fell victim to a devastating injury caused by a discharged blank cartridge.
The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the community, is now under intense scrutiny by the Kajiado North subcounty police commander, Abduba Hussein. In a statement, Hussein expressed his awareness of the grave allegations that surfaced on a fateful Friday night, assuring the public that his officers had promptly taken action.
Describing the allegations as “serious,” Hussein disclosed that the case had been transferred to the capable hands of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). With unwavering determination, DCI officers have embarked on an investigation that aims to bring closure to this alarming incident.
Jackline Lesoi, the aunt of the injured Moses Karathe, shared disturbing details of the events that unfolded. According to Lesoi, her nephew was admitted to the prestigious Kenyatta National Hospital, where he awaited surgery on his damaged right eye. Medical professionals diagnosed a ruptured cornea caused by the powerful propellant force of the blank cartridge.
The narrative provided by Lesoi paints a grim picture of the events leading up to Karathe’s tragic injury. It was reported that Karathe and his companions were detained on allegations of possessing cannabis, colloquially known as ‘bhang.’ In a troubling twist, the police officer responsible for their arrest purportedly demanded a substantial sum of Sh20,000 for their release.
Lesoi further alleged that Karathe’s brother, acting as a negotiator, offered an alternative amount of Sh4,000, the only funds available in his M-Pesa account. The police officer, not content with the reduced sum, instructed him to retrieve the balance in cash. However, before Karathe’s brother could return with the requested funds, another police officer arrived at the scene, further escalating the situation.
According to Lesoi’s account, this second officer brandished his weapon menacingly, ultimately pressing the barrel of the firearm against Karathe’s eye. Tragically, a blank round was discharged at point-blank range, causing catastrophic damage to Karathe’s eye. In the aftermath of the incident, Karathe collapsed to the ground in agony, while the officer who initiated the arrest hastily fled from the police post.
The timeline of events unfolded rapidly, with Karathe being rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital in the dead of night, a desperate bid to salvage his injured eye.
As the investigation into this shocking incident intensifies, the community of Ongata Rongai remains on edge, awaiting answers and justice for Moses Karathe, whose life has been irrevocably altered by the alleged actions of a police officer entrusted with upholding the law.
