Kenyan ‘Omena’ Makes a Splash in China’s Culinary Scene: A New Era for Kenya’s Fishing Industry

In a groundbreaking move, Kenya exported 55 tonnes of anchovies, locally known as ‘omena,’ to China in June. This historic achievement was made possible through a bilateral agreement forged between the two nations in January 2022, setting the stage for a flourishing partnership.

Wu Peng, the Director-General of the Department of African Affairs at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), shared this remarkable development on X.com. The shipment, weighing 55 tonnes, began a mutually beneficial agreement, with Kenya and China reaping the rewards. This significant event took place during the third China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo in late June, underscoring China’s commitment to diversify its food imports from Africa, enhance consumer choices, and bolster trade relations between the two continents.

Responsible for managing this milestone was Huawen Food, a Kenyan subsidiary of the renowned Jinzai Food Group, specializing in food processing and distribution. Situated in Kwale along Kenya’s picturesque coast, Huawen Food relies on a dedicated workforce of local fishermen to supply their processing plant with freshly caught ‘omena,’ which is meticulously dried and packaged.

Despite their intimidating reputation, Anchovies possess a uniquely robust and salty flavor that, when prepared correctly, can tantalize even the most discerning palate. In Kenya, these delectable fish are traditionally enjoyed with staples like ‘ugali’ and greens. Now, they are poised to become the newest cash cow for the Kenyan fishing industry. Liu Zhiyong, the Managing Director of Huawen Food, expressed optimism about the high profit potential of their Kenyan operation.

In China, anchovies find their way into many dishes, ranging from sizzling stir-fries to savory street snacks, refreshing salads, and hearty meals such as anchovy fried rice. As Kenya continues to export ‘omena’ to China, it not only strengthens diplomatic ties but also opens doors to exciting opportunities for the Kenyan fishing sector, positioning ‘omena’ as a sought-after ingredient in Chinese cuisine.
