In a surprising turn of events, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party Secretary General, Cleophas Malala, has intervened in the ongoing leadership crisis at the Nairobi County Assembly.
Amidst growing tensions, Malala summoned all elected UDA MCAs in Nairobi for a crucial meeting to address the controversial changes made by a faction of the UDA leadership.
The dispute arose when a group of MCAs sought to oust Minority Leader Antony Kiragu and Minority Whip Mark Mugambi, proposing Waithera Chege as the new minority leader and Joyce Muthoni as the minority whip. Malala, however, emphasized that the current state of affairs would remain unchanged until the scheduled meeting on Thursday.
In a letter directed to the county assembly speaker, the dissident MCAs presented their nominations, triggering a debate within the party. Malala, speaking on behalf of the UDA secretariat, declared the party’s commitment to neutrality, stating that they would assess the situation objectively.
He announced, “We shall meet at 10 a.m. to establish who is in support of this motion and who is not. As a secretariat, we will be fair; if the signatures are presented to support the bid, even if the leaders involved are my friends, I will not hesitate to let them go.”
Emphasizing adherence to legal procedures, Malala highlighted that the speaker must communicate officially before any leadership changes can occur. Until then, the existing officeholders, including Kiragu and Mugambi, would retain their positions.
Amidst the internal strife, the affected MCAs have pointed fingers at ‘external forces’ attempting to influence UDA’s leadership dynamics within the county. Malala, in response, urged all UDA MCAs to maintain unity and composure, emphasizing the importance of solidarity to facilitate smooth governance under the leadership of Governor Johnson Sakaja.
As the party faces this internal challenge, the outcome of Thursday’s meeting remains uncertain. The political landscape in Nairobi County hangs in the balance, awaiting the resolution of this critical leadership dispute within the UDA ranks.
