In a shocking turn of events in Ruiga village, Imenti Central, Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza was apprehended for her alleged participation in a banned Okolea program meeting, leading to a chaotic scene.
The arrest unfolded after Interior CS Kithure Kindiki banned Okolea meetings, citing the violence that marred a previous gathering on September 22, 2023, at Makiri in Igembe South Constituency.
During a statement in Igembe Central Constituency, Kindiki condemned the Okolea meetings as inciteful, blaming Mwangaza’s supporters for instigating the chaos, which prompted retaliation from opponents.
Kindiki, visibly agitated, accused Mwangaza’s allies of disrupting peace, assaulting journalists, and breaking the law in their misguided attempt to defend the Meru governor. He sternly warned against any attempts to defy the ban, emphasizing that the authorities would not tolerate such behavior.
The ban followed a prior Okolea Program event where clashes erupted, resulting in the burning of donated mattresses and the slaughter of a cow, further escalating tensions in the region. In connection with the chaos, ten suspects were arrested, and Meru Deputy Governor Isaac Mutuma faced intense questioning by the DCI.
The bitter leadership rivalry between Mutuma and Mwangaza, dating back to their election, has continued to intensify, adding another layer of complexity to the unfolding situation in Meru.
