In an unexpected turn of events, Peter Salasya, the Member of Parliament for Mumias East, has found himself at the center of a social media storm after allegations surfaced that he had defaulted on a Sacco loan, leaving his guarantor in a precarious position.
The controversy came to light when renowned activist Boniface Mwangi shared a message from Polycarp Nyonje, a resident of Kakamega and the aggrieved loan guarantor, shedding light on Salasya’s financial predicament.
Nyonje claimed that Salasya had defaulted on a significant loan, amounting to KSh 165,000, for which he had acted as the guarantor. Despite repeated attempts to contact the youthful MP through phone calls and other communication channels, their efforts remained futile, leaving Nyonje in a state of anxiety and financial distress.
The social media outrage that ensued caught the attention of Peter Salasya, who didn’t shy away from addressing the allegations head-on. In a fiery response to the tweets, the MP boldly invited the aggrieved party to his office in Mumias East to collect KSh 40,000, a fraction of the total loan amount.
In a direct message to Nyonje, Salasya declared, “Mr. Watchman, I am here. Tell him to come for the KSh 40,000 in my office in Mumias East.” This unanticipated offer took many by surprise, as it signaled Salasya’s willingness to rectify the situation, albeit with a partial repayment.
Further elaborating on his financial capacity, Salasya defended his stance by disclosing his earnings, stating that he rakes in an impressive KSh 1 million. In light of this substantial income, he portrayed the KSh 40,000 repayment as “a drop in the ocean.” This statement further ignited debates online, with some applauding his willingness to make amends, while others questioned why he hadn’t repaid the full loan amount.
The saga surrounding Peter Salasya’s loan default and subsequent online confrontation has undoubtedly captured the public’s attention. While it remains to be seen whether the guarantor will accept the partial repayment and how this will affect Salasya’s political standing, one thing is clear: social media has become a powerful platform for holding public figures accountable for their financial obligations, with even the most influential individuals not immune to public scrutiny.
