Police in India Rescues 5 Kenyan Women from Traffickers; 2 Arrested

In a significant operation, Indian police have successfully dismantled a sex trafficking racket, liberating five Kenyan women who fell victim to the scheme. Authorities have apprehended two individuals involved in the heinous trafficking, shedding light on a disturbing modus operandi.

The arrested culprits, who had masqueraded as job recruiters for Goa’s thriving hospitality industry, exploited the vulnerable Kenyan women by promising them lucrative opportunities. However, their intentions were far from noble, as they forcibly trapped their victims in the grim world of the flesh trade.
North Goa’s Superintendent of Police, Nidhin Valsan, confirmed the operation’s success: “We have rescued five Kenyan nationals and apprehended two Kenyan suspects involved in this sinister operation.”

Deputy Superintendent of Police Jivba Dalvi, further elaborated on the deception employed by the traffickers. He revealed that the young, educated Kenyan women had been led astray by agents operating on behalf of the traffickers based in Goa. These agents, skilled in deceit, falsely promised the victims hospitality jobs in India.

Upon their arrival in India, the women’s passports and visas were confiscated by the traffickers, leaving them with no option but to comply under the constant threat of violence and crushing debts. The women were subsequently coerced into prostitution, initially through massage parlors, and later plunged into the flesh trade.

The arrested individuals, identified as Maria Dorcas, also known as Israelite, aged 28, and Wilkista Achista, aged 22, are now facing charges under sections 370, 370 (A), 370 (3) r/w 34 IPC (human trafficking), as well as section 4, 5, and 8 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act 1956. Additionally, a Nigerian national involved in the operation is currently on the run from law enforcement.

This crackdown on the trafficking ring was initiated following a tip-off from Anyay Rahit Zindagi (ARZ), an NGO dedicated to assisting victims of human trafficking. Their collaboration with the police proved instrumental in exposing the elaborate network.

Juliana Lohar, a dedicated worker at ARZ, shed light on the dark underbelly of the operation, stating, “The traffickers, primarily Maria and Wilkista, operated discreetly online, exploiting escort websites to solicit clients. The victims found themselves in harrowing circumstances—an unfamiliar country without their essential documents, forced into commercial sexual exploitation. We are committed to supporting the victims in returning safely to their home country and ensuring justice is served.”

In addition to apprehending the culprits, the police have initiated legal proceedings against two hotels in Anjuna, North Goa, where the traffickers allegedly conducted their nefarious activities. This move underscores the authorities’ determination to root out the scourge of human trafficking from the region.
