President William Ruto has made a resolute commitment to stand firmly behind the Kenya Sevens rugby team as they gear up for the Paris Olympics.
The team, affectionately known as Shujaa, achieved a remarkable triumph over the highly-favored South Africa, clinching a 17-12 victory and securing their place in the 2024 Olympics as African Champions for an unprecedented third consecutive time.
President Ruto, presently in the United States, conveyed his deep admiration for Shujaa’s exceptional performance against South Africa through his social media account. He offered his unwavering support to the team, demonstrating his commitment to their success. Similarly, Azimio leader Raila Odinga also extended his felicitations to the squad, commending their remarkable display on the field.
Shujaa’s opening try against South Africa was masterfully executed by Patrick Odongo, with Tony Omondi flawlessly converting, propelling the East Africans into a 7-0 lead.
South Africa swiftly responded with two tries, the first credited to Selvin Davids. However, Ronald Brown’s conversion attempt fell short. Christie Grobbelar added another try for South Africa, granting them a 12-7 advantage as halftime approached.
In the second half, Patrick Odongo, who had been a standout performer throughout the tournament, notched his second try following an assist from Vincent Onyala. This extended Shujaa’s lead to 17-12, with John Okoth sealing the deal with a try.
Before their decisive encounter with South Africa, Shujaa showcased their dominance by defeating Zimbabwe 35-10 in the semi-finals and delivering a commanding 26-0 performance against Burkina Faso in the quarterfinals.
This victory signifies a triumphant resurgence for Shujaa after enduring relegation from the World Series. President Ruto’s pledge of support will undoubtedly serve as a source of motivation and inspiration as the Kenyan rugby stars set their sights on Olympic glory.
