Ruto’s Strategic Moves: New Faces at the Helm of State Corporations

President William Ruto has recently executed a series of strategic appointments within the framework of the State Corporations Act and the Sports Act. These appointments have not only brought fresh leadership but also involved the removal of some incumbents.

In a gazette notice released on Friday, Ruto introduced Elizabeth Chesang as the new chairperson of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities. Chesang assumes this role immediately, with her tenure extending from June 23, 2023, to May 2, 2024. Simultaneously, the notice announced the revocation of Peter Muchiri’s appointment.

The Kenya Development Corporation welcomed Sakwa Bunyasi as its new chairperson for a three-year term, effective from the same Friday. Concomitantly, Michael Nyachae’s tenure in the same position was terminated.

With Sakwa’s transition to the Kenya Development Corporation, his previous role as the chairperson of the Kenya Vision 2030 Delivery Board was rescinded. The notice clarified this move as an exercise of presidential authority.

Geoffrey Mutai has been appointed as the Non-Executive chairperson of the Kenya Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Council for a period of three years, with Ali Menza Mbogo’s appointment revoked.

At the Development Bank of Kenya Limited, Michael Nyachae assumes the position of chairperson of the Board of Directors for a three-year term starting June 23.

Peter Munyiri Maina is set to lead the National Standards Council from June 23 to January 19, 2026, while Jeremiah Kamau Kinyua’s previous appointment has been nullified.

In compliance with the Sports Act, Peter Njuguna Gitau takes the helm as the chairperson of the Board of Directors of Sports Kenya, with his tenure extending until October 5, 2024, and Charles Waithaka’s appointment being revoked.

In an interesting addition, Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has appointed former Baringo Governor Stanley Kiptis as the Chairperson of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority. Kiptis is set to serve for a three-year term starting June 23, 2023, marking another noteworthy development in the ongoing series of strategic appointments by President William Ruto.
