Teacher Arrested for Selling Fake Exam Papers

In a significant breakthrough, law enforcement officials apprehended a 23-year-old Christian Religion Education (CRE) teacher, famously known as Mr Examiner, for his alleged involvement in a shocking scam involving the sale of counterfeit national examination papers in Kimabu.

The arrest, made on Friday, followed extensive investigations carried out by detectives affiliated with the Kenya National Examinations Council.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations revealed that the suspect, who teaches CRE at a school in Kiambu, had illicitly acquired the 2023 national examination papers for both primary and secondary schools.

Operating under the alias Mr Examiner, he utilized over 10 WhatsApp and Telegram accounts to peddle these fraudulent exam papers. Disturbingly, he was selling individual exam papers for a partial sum of Sh1,500 and the complete set, along with its marking scheme, for Sh2,000.

Detectives disclosed that the teacher had meticulously orchestrated his scheme, cautioning the over 900 parents and students in his group against diverting discussions and insisted on focusing solely on the illicit transaction. “Avoid unrelated discussions; my inbox is flooded. I have numerous clients,” he warned in one of his responses to group members.

To bolster his credibility, Mr Examiner purported to be the sole supplier of genuine papers and urged group members to exercise vigilance against potential scammers. He had taken extreme measures, using a stolen identity card to register multiple SIM cards for communication purposes.

Additionally, he had set up a bank account and provided a specific till pay-bill number for receiving payments.

However, law enforcement officers thwarted his elaborate plans by infiltrating the groups, posing as students in search of exam materials. The arrest took place in Gikambura village, Kiambu County, where several SIM cards, believed to be crucial evidence in the case, were seized from his possession.

This incident has raised concerns among education authorities, prompting the Ministry of Education, the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to fortify their efforts in ensuring the integrity of the upcoming KIPSEA and KCSE examinations.

Stringent measures are being put in place to prevent any potential irregularities and maintain the credibility of the examination system.
