Trade CS Moses Kuria Extends Apology Over Contentious Fuel Price Comments

In an unexpected turn of events, Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has extended a somewhat unconventional apology to the Kenyan public for his recent remarks concerning the escalating fuel prices in the country.

The apology, laden with a hint of sarcasm, was issued amidst a backdrop of mounting criticism, primarily stemming from Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, who had urged President William Ruto to oust the minister for his perceived insensitivity towards the plight of Kenyan citizens.

Kuria, in a statement released on a Wednesday, decided to address the elephant in the room. “Dear Kenyans, on Friday, September 15th, I made some comments indicating that the price of fuel is likely to surge in the upcoming months due to global dynamics,” he admitted.

However, the intriguing twist came when he indirectly acknowledged the influence of his critics, particularly Dr. Boni Khalwale, and their impact on his change of heart. “I have since been advised by people like Dr. Boni Khalwale and his master that the statement was incorrect, insensitive, and, dare I say, ARROGANT. I am now enlightened that the fuel prices are expected to decrease. I extend my heartfelt apologies, for as the old adage goes, to err is human,” Kuria humbly conceded.

This unexpected act of contrition comes on the heels of a controversial period for the Cabinet Secretary. He had found himself in hot water for his dismissive attitude towards those voicing their grievances about the exorbitant fuel prices, especially following the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s recent decision to revise pump prices.

In a previous statement, Kuria had boldly proclaimed, “I repeat. Petrol will be Ksh 260 by February. And El Nino is coming in three weeks that will last till March. These are global and climate change-driven. Responsible leaders ought to tell the truth to prepare the people. You can throw stones at me all you want.”

The unexpected apology issued by Moses Kuria serves as a reminder of the power of public opinion and the importance of leaders acknowledging their mistakes. It remains to be seen how Kenyans will react to this unique gesture of contrition from a government official known for his outspoken nature.
