In a shocking turn of events, two Police Constables, PC Raphael Nzioka and Nancy Kerubu, stationed at Eastleigh North Police Station, found themselves on the wrong side of the law. The daring duo has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for demanding a hefty Ksh.100,000 bribe from a local businessman.
The incident unfolded last Thursday when the two officers reportedly stormed a bustling mobile shop in Nairobi’s Eastleigh neighborhood, creating panic among the residents. Without any apparent justification, they proceeded to confiscate cellular devices valued at a staggering Ksh.300,000.
What followed was a blatant display of corruption as the officers, instead of upholding the law, attempted to extort the businessman. The victim was left with no choice but to turn to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission for assistance.
An anonymous source within the EACC informed Citizen Digital about the incident. They stated, “Subsequently, the officers demanded a bribe of Ksh.100,000 from the complainant in order to return the confiscated stock of mobile phones, prompting the trader to seek help from the Commission.”
Following a thorough investigation of these grave allegations, EACC detectives swiftly organized an operation that led to the arrest of the two police officers while they were in the process of receiving the demanded bribe.
The two officers were taken into custody and subjected to an intensive interrogation at Integrity Centre Police Station. Later, they were transferred to Kilimani Police Station for further processing.
EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi confirmed the arrests, shedding light on the growing concern over extortion and bribery involving police officers. Ngumbi said, “The emerging trend shows that in most cases, it is no longer bribery to forbear law enforcement action, but pure extortion of money from citizens who are not facing any legitimate accusation of violating the law.”
In response to these worrisome developments, EACC is calling upon police commanders at all levels to take a firm stand against such despicable acts. These actions are not only criminal but also deeply immoral, causing immense distress to citizens.
The EACC hopes that by holding officers accountable, they can mitigate this menace and protect the public from further acts of corruption by those sworn to uphold the law.
