Wafula Chebukati Declines Appearance Before Raila-Ruto Talks Committee

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, has declined a request to participate in discussions with the National Dialogue Committee, which is aiming to facilitate talks between prominent political figures Raila Odinga and William Ruto.

Chebukati made his refusal public on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, where he also revealed that former IEBC commissioners Professor Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu would similarly not be engaging with the committee on Thursday, September 28.

In his statement, Chebukati asserted that the committee’s proposed topics had already been addressed and resolved. He argued that a Commission of Inquiry should be established to thoroughly investigate the activities surrounding the 2022 general elections, emphasizing that taking part in the committee discussions would be a betrayal of IEBC staff members who had endured torture and even lost their lives during that period.

“To participate would be to betray IEBC staff who were tortured, murdered, and a reward for impunity. Instead, a Commission of Inquiry should be formed,” he wrote.

Notably, Chebukati tagged both of the former commissioners, Molu subsequently reposted the statement on his own X account.

Guliye’s most recent X activity dated back to September 13, where he shared a Supreme Court judgment related to a case involving the Commission and nominated MP Sabina Chege.

Both Chebukati and Molu, along with Guliye and the Commission’s CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan, have consistently affirmed that the 2022 election was conducted fairly and transparently.

The National Dialogue Committee had anticipated the presence of Chebukati, Molu, and their fellow former commissioners, including former Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera, as well as former commissioners Francis Wanderi, Irene Masit, and Justus Nyang’aya during their discussions.
