In a heart-wrenching incident at Madubaha beach in Mombasa old town, a 26-year-old man named Jafar Mohamed lost his life while attempting to rescue a distressed 45-year-old woman and her young daughter in the Indian Ocean. The tragedy occurred on a Friday evening, transforming what initially seemed like a heroic act into a devastating event.
Witnesses recounted how Mohamed, enjoying his time at the beach, sprang into action upon noticing the woman and her 13-year-old daughter struggling in the water. Displaying immense bravery, he successfully swam the pair to safety on the shore.
However, in a sudden and mysterious turn of events, Mohamed vanished back into the sea, swept away by strong currents.
Despite efforts by local authorities, including the Marine Safety and Rescue Team, Mohamed remained missing, prompting a widespread search and rescue operation. Tragically, the woman succumbed to her ordeal en route to the hospital, while her daughter was admitted in critical condition at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The incident, occurring around 4 pm, led to a distress call at 6 pm, prompting the involvement of the Kenya Coast Guard and Kenya Navy, although their response was delayed.
Local authorities, including Chief Fire Officer Ibrahim Basafar and County Executive Dan Manyala, have emphasized the need for increased patrols by the Kenya Coast Guard due to rising cases of drowning in the city’s beaches.
As the search for Mohamed’s body continued, both local and international tourists visiting Mombasa during the festive season were urged to exercise caution and vigilance.
The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the ocean and the selfless courage displayed by individuals like Mohamed, whose bravery ultimately cost him his life in the effort to save others.
