In a startling turn of events, Bunyala West’s Member of the County Assembly, Carlbenz Okonya, finds himself entangled in a legal battle as he stands accused of engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old girl. The allegations against him have resulted in his arraignment and subsequent detention.
During the proceedings, which took place before Busia Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti, MCA Okonya vehemently denied the charges brought against him. However, the legal system took a stern stance, deciding to keep him in custody until Thursday, September 28, 2023, following a prosecution request.
The Director of Public Prosecution revealed that the prosecution, represented by Faith Kaberia and Abraham Mumo, sought to detain Okonya for a period of 14 days and vehemently opposed any bail or bond requests. Their argument hinged on concerns over potential witness interference in the case.
Citing the need to ensure the safety and security of the victim and her family, the DPP explained, “The prosecution made an application to oppose bail and bond and requested that the bail and bond hearing be deferred for 14 days to allow the witness protection agency to assess and place the victim and her family under protection.”
The case has gripped the attention of the local community, leaving them anxious for the forthcoming developments in this high-profile legal saga.
