Mirema’s 10-Storey Building Collapse: NCA’s Revelations Unveil Structural Blunder

The recent collapse of a ten-storey building in Mirema, Nairobi County, has been attributed to a fundamental flaw in the construction process, according to preliminary findings from the National Construction Authority (NCA). The incident, which occurred on September 24, has prompted NCA’s Executive Director, Maurice Akech, to place blame squarely on the poor quality of structural concrete employed during the construction phase.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, the NCA assured the public that a thorough investigation into the matter would be conducted in the coming days to uncover the full extent of the issue. It was also disclosed that an adjacent building suffered damage as a result of the collapse.

However, specific details regarding the severity of the damage and whether evacuation would be necessary remain undisclosed. Additionally, the incident resulted in damage to a vehicle and Kenya Power infrastructure.

Despite the catastrophic collapse, the NCA’s statement emphasized that the building’s owner had meticulously complied with all the requisite legal procedures before initiating construction. Akech further disclosed that the building owner had successfully secured the necessary permits and licenses from both Nairobi County and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

Furthermore, the statement highlighted a curious fact – while the building under construction was initially planned as a ten-storey structure, the owner had obtained approval for a 12-storey residential building. This revelation adds an intriguing layer to the narrative surrounding the incident.

This unfortunate event in Mirema, Roysambu, which mercifully resulted in no reported casualties, has reignited a nationwide discourse on the country’s building standards.
