In a decisive move, the Transport Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, has directed the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to resolve the pressing issue of backlogged driving licenses and digital number plates, accompanied by specific deadlines.
Following an unannounced visit to the NTSA offices in Nairobi, Murkomen issued a directive that all processed digital number plates must be distributed by the upcoming Monday. He expressed frustration over the fact that many motorists were still awaiting their number plates, even though the processing had already been completed.
Blaming the delays squarely on the bureaucratic hurdles within the agency, Murkomen highlighted the case of Maurice, a motorist based in Mombasa who had not received his new plates despite being notified of the process’s completion.
Additionally, he mandated that the backlog of driving licenses should be eliminated within the next 14 days. He expressed his disappointment, stating, “It is disheartening to see that more than 50,000 driving license applications, some dating back to September 2022, remain unprocessed.”
“I have given NTSA a two-week ultimatum to clear this backlog, inform Kenyan citizens of their nearest collection points, and establish the necessary procedures to expedite the processing and issuance of driving licenses and digital number plates,” he asserted.
Murkomen further pledged that pending logbooks, which had yet to be processed, would also be cleared within the same two-week timeframe.
The CS’s directives came on the heels of an impromptu visit to NTSA offices, prompted by mounting complaints about the prolonged delivery of essential services. Murkomen emphasized his commitment to ensuring that Kenyan citizens receive top-quality services, vowing to implement measures that prevent such delays from occurring in the future.
Furthermore, he acknowledged the need for improvements in the driving license printer’s capacity, as it struggled to handle the influx of applications in a timely manner.
