Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is advocating removing the 2022 presidential election audit from the bipartisan negotiations. He believes this agenda, pushed primarily by the opposition, hinders progress toward a meaningful agreement in the talks due to its impracticality.
Gachagua expressed his views during a church service in Laare town, Meru County, emphasizing that the Supreme Court’s validation of President William Ruto’s victory cannot be overturned, making the matter irrelevant for discussion.
He stated, “There is no constitutional provision for auditing a General Election. The Supreme Court already conducted the audit and declared you the validly elected President of Kenya.”
“We disagree with the inclusion of this agenda in the talks. The matter was conclusively resolved when you were sworn in on September 13th, and you have been performing admirably without any complaints,” Gachagua added.
The Deputy President further asserted that he is prepared to oppose any discussion of this agenda, considering it futile, and advised the opposition to redirect their focus toward the next electoral cycle.
“We cannot entertain an agenda to audit the General Election. We elected you, and you emerged victorious. If anyone has doubts, it is not among these people in the congregation,” he remarked.
Gachagua proposed that if the opposition wishes to engage in discussions related to elections, they should look ahead to 2027, which will be the appropriate time for such deliberations conducted through the ballot.
