EACC Intensifies Efforts to Curb Academic Certificate Forgery

In a decisive move to combat corruption, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has disclosed an ongoing investigation into 150 cases involving public servants suspected of fabricating their academic credentials.

This revelation came to light during the launch of the EACC’s Anti-Graft Plan, spanning from 2023 to 2028, held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

The commission underscored the pervasive issue of academic certificate forgery, necessitating a vigorous crackdown. The EACC stated that it is actively probing more than 150 instances of academic certificate forgery among individuals serving in the public sector, with an additional 13 cases currently awaiting resolution in the courts.

Under the leadership of Twalib Mbarak, the EACC noted that investigations into several other cases have already concluded. Those found guilty will face prosecution, imprisonment, and the confiscation of assets illicitly obtained.

Some individuals have already faced incarceration or fines, while in other instances, the EACC has secured court orders to reclaim salaries and benefits accrued through the use of counterfeit academic certificates.

The surge in academic certificate forgery, particularly in the lead-up to the previous general elections, brought this dishonest practice into sharp focus. As a result of the widespread prevalence of this vice, the commission is urging employers to conduct thorough background checks on their recruits to safeguard against falling victim to fraudsters.

The EACC is vocal about the urgent need for employers to address this issue by implementing stringent background checks, universities to strengthen their internal controls, and educational institutions to uphold established standards.

During the launch, the commission also emphasized its escalated efforts in the fight against corruption, highlighting significant progress across its various areas of responsibility, including law enforcement, corruption prevention, education, and the promotion of ethical standards.
