Former Kenyan Chief Justice Evan Gicheru, aged 79, has sadly passed away, as confirmed by current Chief Justice David Maraga in a statement issued on Saturday. The statement, intriguingly, bears a December 25 date.
In a somber tweet, Chief Justice Maraga announced, “I am deeply saddened to announce the demise of retired Chief Justice Evans Gicheru which occurred this morning.”
He went on to express heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Judiciary, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), and himself, extending his wishes for courage and fortitude to Gicheru’s grieving family. The precise cause of his death remains undisclosed.
Chief Justice Maraga paid tribute to Gicheru’s pivotal role in solidifying judicial service independence in Kenya, marking an end to the era when the Judiciary was influenced by the Executive. Gicheru’s legacy in this regard is bound to endure.
Evan Gicheru holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Chief Justice, having held the office from 2003 until 2011. Notably, he administered the controversial swearing-in of former President Mwai Kibaki on the evening of December 30, 2007, amidst widespread protests regarding the election results.
Leaders, including ODM leader Raila Odinga, have extended their condolences to Gicheru’s bereaved family during this difficult time.
