In a recent development, Fred Matiang’i, the former Education Cabinet Secretary, was virtually summoned by the National Assembly’s Public Investment Committee on Education and Governance. The committee sought clarification on the closure of public university campuses outside Kenya during Matiang’i’s tenure. Particularly, the closure of Kenyatta University’s Kigali campus, established with a hefty investment of KSh 518 million, was under scrutiny.
Despite being overseas in Washington DC, Matiang’i participated in the session remotely. He explained to the MPs that the government’s decision to shut down these campuses was not personal, but a collective government resolution. According to Matiang’i, the closures were necessitated by the host countries, Rwanda and Tanzania, making it impossible for the universities to continue operations. Despite government attempts to engage with Rwandan authorities, the situation remained challenging, leading to the unfortunate closures.
This appearance marked the second time Matiang’i emerged into the public spotlight since March 2022. Previously, he had been summoned to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters to record a statement regarding an alleged police raid at his residence. Accompanied by a team of prominent lawyers, including Eugene Wamalwa, Otiende Amollo, Steve Mogaka, Okong’o Omogeni, and Danstan Omari, Matiang’i faced the inquiry with confidence and transparency.
