In a poignant tribute to Kenya’s legendary athlete, Wilson Kiprugut Chuma, President William Ruto announced the official renaming of Kericho Green Stadium to the Wilson Kiprugut Chuma Stadium. This historic decision was unveiled during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebration, where President Ruto expressed his heartfelt admiration for Chuma’s exceptional achievement.
During his address, President Ruto shared, “In honor of Kiprugut Chuma, the first Kenyan athlete to clinch an Olympic medal, I am proud to rename this stadium after him. This renaming is a well-deserved tribute to a sporting icon who brought immense pride to our nation.”
The initiative to rename the stadium gained momentum after fervent appeals from Kericho residents to Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba during Kiprugut Chuma’s funeral ceremony. The residents passionately urged the government to immortalize the late athlete’s legacy by dedicating a stadium in his memory.
Kiprugut Chuma, a revered Kenyan sprinter and middle-distance runner, made history at the Tokyo 1964 Olympics, securing Kenya’s inaugural Olympic medal. His remarkable journey continued at the 1968 Mexico Olympics, where he showcased his prowess in the 800-meter event.
Chuma’s achievements extended beyond the Olympics. He contributed significantly to Kenya’s athletic legacy by clinching medals at the Commonwealth Games, including a silver in the 880-yard event in 1966. His unparalleled dedication led to two gold medals in the 400 and 800 meters at the inaugural All-Africa Games in 1965.
Born and raised in Kericho, Kiprugut’s talent blossomed during his formative years at Kaptebeswet Primary School and Sitotwet Intermediate School. His passion for running catapulted him to numerous victories in the 880-yard category at the East and Central African Championships.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Kiprugut Chuma was posthumously honored as the Kenyan Sports Personality of the Year in 2010, a testament to his enduring impact on the nation’s sporting landscape. Tragically, this revered athlete bid farewell to the world on November 1, 2022, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
The renaming of Kericho Green Stadium to the Wilson Kiprugut Chuma Stadium stands as a lasting tribute, ensuring that the indomitable spirit of this sporting icon lives on, reminding all Kenyans of the extraordinary achievements that continue to shape the nation’s athletic heritage.
