The Dark Secrets of Shakahola Forest: Unraveling Mackenzie’s Cult

In a startling revelation detailed in the Senate report titled “The Dark Secrets of Shakahola Forest: Unraveling Mackenzie’s Cult,” it has been exposed that the controversial preacher, Paul Mackenzie, strategically chose the remote and secluded Shakahola Forest to carry out his nefarious activities.

According to the findings presented by an 11-member team led by Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana, the villages established by Mackenzie were located 16 kilometers away from the nearest settlement, ensuring absolute isolation for his followers.

Inside these villages, Mackenzie’s followers were subjected to a horrifying regime. They were prohibited from leaving the area or interacting with each other. Moreover, they were coerced into destroying crucial documents, including national identity cards, birth certificates, property titles, academic certificates, and marriage licenses.

This destruction of identification papers led to a situation where survivors denied their previous identities, causing confusion and complications during their identification.

Upon joining the Shakahola community, followers relinquished their possessions to the church leadership and assumed new identities. As part of their initiation, converts were forced into fasting in specific villages, enduring extreme hunger. Shockingly, lactating mothers were denied the basic right to breastfeed their infants.

The report also highlighted the intense recruitment of followers during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Mackenzie’s ominous call for fasting, allegedly in preparation for the end of the world, led to a disturbing sequence: children, women, and then men were subjected to prolonged periods of starvation. Mackenzie claimed that this ritual would culminate in his own ascension to heaven from the heart of Malindi.

To enforce his directives and guard the forest against outside interference, Mackenzie established an enforcement group, ominously named the “enforcers.” This armed militia, comprising both men and women, ruthlessly carried out Mackenzie’s orders. Attempts to infiltrate the forest were met with violence; vigilantes torched vehicles and resorted to lethal force to maintain the cult’s isolation.

Inside the forest, areas were designated with biblical names, such as Sidon, Jericho, Bethlehem, and Babylon. Strong cult members were taken to these cities, where they faced further indoctrination and control.

Those who succumbed to starvation were disposed of in shallow graves dug by the “enforcers.” Those who dared to resist or escape faced brutal deaths, either by strangulation or severe beatings at the hands of these merciless enforcers.

Amidst this darkness, there were glimmers of hope. Some fortunate souls managed to escape the clutches of Mackenzie’s cult. They were rescued by brave Orma herders and neighboring communities, offering a ray of light in the face of this horrifying revelation.
