Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania Secure Rights to Host 2027 AFCON

In a historic moment for East Africa, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has chosen Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania as the joint hosts for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The announcement came during the CAF Executive Committee’s meeting in Cairo, Egypt, where CAF President Patrice Motsepe unveiled the triumphant “Pamoja” Bid from East Africa.

This remarkable achievement marks the first time that the prestigious African football tournament will be held in East and Central Africa. The event, which takes place every two years, is organized and funded by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the continental governing body for football.

The East African “Pamoja” bid outshone its competitors during the CAF executive meeting, where representatives from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania showcased their dedication and commitment to hosting the tournament.

Kenya’s delegation was led by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa.

To secure the bid, the Kenyan Ministry of Sports unveiled comprehensive plans to upgrade three stadiums to meet international standards: Kasarani Stadium, Nyayo Stadium, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret. Additionally, the government plans to construct the Talanta Stadium at the Jamhuri Sports Grounds in Nairobi.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the successful bid, CAF President Motsepe emphasized that hosting rights come with stringent requirements. These include ensuring that stadiums meet the necessary standards well in advance of the tournament and demonstrating the capability of the country’s transport infrastructure to handle the influx of visitors and fans.

Kenya must also provide sufficient accommodation facilities for teams, technical staff, delegates, VIPs, and visitors. Motsepe emphasized CAF’s commitment to monitoring progress and evaluating compliance with these requirements.

The government now faces the important task of fulfilling its host obligations to prevent a repeat of the scenario in 2018 when Kenya lost the right to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) due to inadequate infrastructure.

With the joint efforts of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, the 2027 Afcon promises to be a landmark event in African football history, showcasing the region’s passion and dedication to the sport.
