In a breathtaking display of athleticism, Kenya’s rising star, Agnes Ngetich, left spectators in awe as she obliterated the women-only 10km world record during the Transylvania 10km event held in Brasov, Romania, on Sunday, September 10, 2023.
At just 22 years old, Ngetich achieved a monumental milestone by clocking an astonishing time of 29 minutes and 24 seconds, decisively surpassing the previous record of 30 minutes and 1 second, held by the late Agnes Tirop since 2021.
Agnes Ngetich’s stellar performance has now etched her name into the annals of history as the third-fastest woman ever to conquer this distance. She stands in the elite company of Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw, who set records in mixed races in Castellon (29 minutes and 14 seconds) last year and Valencia (29 minutes and 19 seconds) this year.
Agnes Ngetich’s phenomenal run was marked by a blistering first 5km, completed in 14 minutes and 25 seconds, a remarkable four seconds faster than the previous women-only world record for this distance. Her compatriot, Catherine Reline, finished behind her with a time of 30 minutes and 14 seconds, while Uganda’s Joy Cheptoyek secured the third spot on the podium, completing the race in 30 minutes and 34 seconds.
This historic achievement was further embellished by Weldon Langat, who ensured a Kenyan double victory by triumphing in the men’s race with a remarkable time of 27 minutes and 5 seconds.
