KFS Starts Interviews for 4,000 Kenyans to Join Groundbreaking Green Army Program

Nairobi, Kenya – The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has just unveiled a groundbreaking initiative, the Green Army Program, to align with President William Ruto’s visionary goal of achieving a 30% forest cover by 2023. To make this ambitious dream a reality, KFS is currently interviewing 4,000 enthusiastic Kenyans who will become the driving force behind this eco-friendly mission.

Under the Green Army Program, these selected young Kenyans will embark on an extraordinary journey to plant an astounding 15 billion seedlings over ten years. This translates to the monumental task of planting and nurturing 1.5 billion seedlings annually.

KFS has diligently reviewed all the applications received, and interviews for the chosen candidates are expected to occur in the forthcoming weeks. It’s essential to note that no additional applications will be accepted now as KFS gears up for this transformative venture.

Upon selection, these dedicated individuals will become integral members of the Green Army, working under the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change as nursery workers. Their primary responsibilities will encompass nurturing tree seedlings, conducting tree planting activities, engaging in silvicultural operations within forests, and performing various other forestry duties.

KFS has devised a comprehensive set of measures to guarantee the survival and thriving of the seedlings planted by the Green Army. These measures encompass regular monitoring, ensuring proper watering, implementing protective measures against pests, and fostering community engagement to encourage stewardship of the newly planted trees.

In a technological stride, KFS has also introduced the “Jaza Miti” mobile application, which will facilitate the tracking of trees planted throughout the country by the Green Army. This innovative tool is expected to revolutionize the monitoring process and ensure accountability in achieving the ambitious 15-billion tree goal.

During the official launch of the 15-billion tree program in December 2022, President William Ruto emphasized that this initiative is not only about reducing greenhouse emissions but also a vital step towards halting deforestation and restoring 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscapes.

KFS reports an impressive inventory of 42.4 million seedlings ready to be planted in nurseries, with a remarkable 22 million seedlings primed for planting during the current rainy season. The inaugural mission of the Green Army will be to ensure that over 21 million of these seedlings are efficiently produced in various regions across the country.

This marks a momentous endeavor in Kenya’s pursuit of a greener and more sustainable future, with the Green Army at the forefront of this environmental revolution. Stay tuned for further updates on this monumental initiative as it unfolds.
