Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has approached to address recent speculation surrounding his alleged feud with President William Ruto over valuable land in the densely populated county. In a resolute statement released on Sunday, Governor Wamatangi vehemently rebuffed these allegations, dismissing them as unfounded and baseless.
Reports that first emerged on September 1 claimed President Ruto had reprimanded Wamatangi during his visit to the Sagana State Lodge. These reports alleged that Ruto had confronted the governor for refusing to surrender ownership of two parcels of land previously held by a multinational fruit processing company. Additionally, rumors were circulating that influential government figures were exerting pressure on the first-term governor to release this land.
Furthermore, it was suggested in these reports that the county’s leader was facing pressure to relinquish another piece of land located in Thika Town. Wamatangi vehemently refuted claims that he had pledged to block influential individuals in the national government from taking control of the land without a clear plan to benefit the local population.
In a previous video statement that Wamatangi referenced, he accused unnamed, well-connected individuals of attempting to seize the land at the expense of the local community. He questioned the integrity of leaders prioritizing their interests over their constituents, saying, “What kind of leader are you if your duty is to serve the people, yet you conspire against those who entrusted you with that duty?”
Wamatangi passionately asserted, “I will not allow any of the parcels of land I hold in Kiambu to be unlawfully taken by anyone. Too many parcels have been unlawfully taken, and that will no longer be tolerated.”
The governor emphasized that these lands would be dedicated to socio-economic development and affirmed that they would not be sold to affluent individuals.
Addressing the residents of Kiambu, Wamatangi stopped short of naming specific adversaries but expressed unwavering faith that he would overcome the challenges, relying on divine guidance. In his Sunday statement, he assured Kenyans that President Ruto was not among those he had referred to in his previous remarks.
These developments occurred shortly after Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa insisted that the governor had received a stern talking-to from the Head of State. Thang’wa asserted, “If you cannot align with the principles of Kenya Kwanza and work for the common good, then you do not belong in our ranks.”
The strained relationship between Wamatangi and Kiambu politicians aligned with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has led to conflicts, with county legislators contemplating the impeachment of the first-term governor. Members of the County Assembly (MCA) have accused him of misappropriating public funds and failing to engage them in development matters.
