In Kenya there are 6 classification of hospitals based on capabilities to deliver services. The highest ranked 6 is the most advanced hospitals capable of offering treatment as well as training and education with research.

That is why you may notice that after going to one facility and the hospital gets overwhelmed by the patient conditions, the hospital refers the patient to a more advanced facility.

Level 6 Hospitals means National Referral Hospitals.

These hospitals offers a wide range of services. It is wholesome and offers all the six levels of healthcare but the facilities are more advanced and are used as referral centers.

1. Kenyatta National Hospital

 Offers specialized consultations in curative care.

2. Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital

Offers specialized consultations in curative care.

3. Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital

 Offers specialized consultations in curative care.

4. Mathari Hospital

Mathari Teaching and Referral Hospital offers specialized mental services.

5. National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital

Offers specialized services in orthopaedic and spinal injuries.

6. Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital

Offers specialized consultations in curative care.

Six Levels Of Health Care

Health-care institutions are divided into six tiers. The first five are overseen by county governments, while the sixth is overseen by the National government. Patients can use a recommendation letter to go from one level to the next in this system.

Level 6 Hospitals

These are the National Referral Hospitals.

Acts as a research, teaching and referral hospitals.

Managed by the national government.

Level 5 Hospitals

These are the County Referral Hospitals.

Mbagathi Hospital and Mama Lucy Hospital in Nairobi are both Level 5 and Level 4 hospitals.

The facility has more than 100 beds for inpatient.

Health research can be conducted in these institutions.

Level 4 Hospitals

These are county hospitals.

The facilities offers similar services as level 3 hospitals.

They also do X-Ray services.

Level 3 Hospitals

These are health centers that have minimal facilities like big hospitals.

The facility is managed by at least one nurse, clinical officer, and a doctor.

Some of the services offered in Level 3 hospitals include:

  • Counselling

  • Maternity in-patient services with a ward
  • Diabetes & hypertension clinics
  • Comprehensive care clinics for patients living with HIV

Level 2 Hospitals

These are the health dispensaries.

They are often managed by clinical officers.

Some of the services offered at Level 3 Hospitals include but not limited to:

  • Pharmacy
  • Counselling services
  • Curative treatment
  • Tuberculosis services
  • Laboratory Services
  • Outpatient services
  • VCT services
  • Well baby Clinics
  • Antenatal and Postnatal services
  • They issue referral letters to other facilities

Level 1 Hospitals

These are community facilities.

These facilities are managed by certified medical clinical officers.

Some of the services offered at Level 1 Hospitals include but not limited to:

  • Blood pressure and blood sugar testing
  • HIV testing
  • Tuberculosis (TB) screening, home visits, contact tracing of TB patients and tracing of TB defaulters
  • Screening of malnutrition
  • Health talks with pregnant women and observations of signs of danger
  • Treatment of minor ailments like diarrhoea
  • Malaria rapid test
  • Issuance of referral letters to other facilities
