Mysterious Death of Son in Jail Shrouded in Questions

Two weeks ago, an unexpected wave of sympathy messages began pouring in for the Moseti family in Nakuru. The cause? The sudden and mysterious demise of their youngest son, Moses Moseti, who had been remanded at the local GK prison.

Fearing the worst, the family rushed to the Nakuru GK prison, desperately seeking information about the fate of their 34-year-old kin. To their astonishment, official details were scarce, leaving them with mere fragments of information suggesting that Moses was no longer at the prison; he had been rushed to Nakuru General Provincial Hospital.

According to Sabina Maroro, Moses’s sister, the available information hinted that he had arrived at the hospital in a dire state, foaming at the mouth and struggling to breathe. Tragically, they were informed that he had succumbed while awaiting medical attention in the hospital’s casualty area.

A post-mortem examination conducted on Moses’s body later revealed a disturbing truth – death by asphyxiation resulting from neck trauma, strongly implying strangulation. Dr. Titus Ngulungu’s autopsy report left no room for doubt: Moses had fallen victim to foul play.

Despite mounting questions and grief, prison authorities have chosen to remain tight-lipped about the incident. Various guards have provided conflicting accounts, but officers on duty that fateful day have now cooperated by providing statements to the Nakuru West police station.

The hospital’s records tell a chilling tale. Moses had been brought in on September 8, but shockingly, he was already deceased upon arrival, as recorded under OB 126/8/9/2023.

Rose Maroro, another of Moses’s sisters, expressed the family’s frustration, saying, “The guards are telling us various stories that he suddenly started foaming in the mouth and panting. But medical records show they brought him in already dead. All we want is justice for our brother. This is very sad.”

According to the family’s account, Moses had found himself in the remand prison in mid-June following a dispute with his father, Samuel Maroro. The father had returned from his Kisii rural home to discover that Moses had not only vandalized the cowshed but had also sold off materials worth Sh13,000.

It was not the first time Moses had committed such an offense, and in an attempt to resolve the issue and deter further misconduct, the father had decided to involve the police.

Little did Samuel Maroro know that he was unwittingly delivering his youngest son to his untimely demise. Moses had been charged with malicious damage to property in the magistrate’s court and was scheduled for trial on September 20.

The family vehemently denies the possibility of any pre-existing health condition afflicting Moses. They recall speaking with him on the very day of his death, and he had appeared cheerful and in good health.

Joseph Maroro, Moses’s brother, recounted their last conversation, saying, “He was jovial and happy when he called me to check on us. There was no sign in his voice that he was sick or distressed that he could die the same day. There is foul play here, and all we seek is the truth and justice for my brother,” he insisted.

Nakuru West DCIO Charles Kamau assured the family that investigations were ongoing and claimed significant progress had been made, including the recording of statements from the guards on duty. Yet, the crucial questions surrounding Moses Moseti’s tragic demise still loom large, leaving his grieving family yearning for answers and justice.
