Nairobi Prepares for El Nino: Governor Sakaja’s Game Plan

In light of the Kenya Meteorological Department’s prediction of heavy El Nino rains between September 2023 and January 2024, the Nairobi County government has unveiled an ambitious preparedness initiative to safeguard its residents and infrastructure.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, in a recent announcement on Monday, September 11, revealed the comprehensive strategy to counter the impending deluge. The primary focus of this plan is on proactive measures to avert potential flooding disasters.
A significant aspect of the strategy is centered on maintaining clear and functional drainages. To accomplish this vital task, the county has enlisted the services of 3,500 environmental officers who will play a pivotal role in keeping the drainages free from blockages.

Governor Sakaja has also directed the construction sector directorate to identify and map unsafe buildings that could pose a threat during flooding. This proactive measure aims to ensure the prompt evacuation of residents in these vulnerable structures to guarantee their safety.

In addition to these preparations, the Nairobi County government has made substantial investments in essential equipment, including 27 new work trucks, fire trucks, flushing units, ambulances, excavators, and exhausters. These assets are poised to play a crucial role in addressing various challenges that may arise during the rainy season.

Furthermore, the county has pledged to reduce ambulance response times to a mere 9 minutes, ensuring that swift medical assistance reaches those in need, thus potentially saving lives.
While the effectiveness of Governor Sakaja’s efforts in mitigating the recurrent flooding issues linked to El Nino rains will only be fully realized with time, these proactive measures demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding the well-being of Nairobi’s residents.

Historically, the most vulnerable areas during such events have been slum communities like Kibera, Korogocho, Mathare, and Muthurwa. These regions often bear the brunt of flooding, which raises health concerns when combined with sewage water, particularly among the children residing there.
