Nyanza Governors Reaffirm Loyalty to Raila Odinga Amid Political Maneuvering

In a resolute display of allegiance, a faction of Nyanza governors has conveyed their unwavering support to ODM leader Raila Odinga, vowing to stand firm against any external political influence. This proclamation was made during a press conference held in Kisumu, where the leaders, led by Anyang Nyong’o (Kisumu), Gladys Wanga (Homabay County), Ochilo Ayacko (Migori), and Simba Arati (Kisii), emphasized their competence in handling overtures from any quarter seeking to sway their political stance.

Nyong’o, speaking on behalf of the group, declared their affiliation with the Azimio movement and affirmed their faith in Raila Odinga, whom they hailed as the visionary architect of change and progress in the nation. With conviction, Nyong’o stated, “There is no coalition or party that can outmatch Azimio. Consequently, no tempest can dislodge us, nor can any seismic shift undermine our solid foundation.” He added, “These external attempts do not perturb us in the least.”

Over the weekend, Raila Odinga had sternly warned President Ruto to refrain from meddling with opposition governors. Accusing Ruto of luring Azimio governors with development incentives in various counties, Raila characterized these efforts as a calculated move to destabilize the Azimio coalition.

In Kisii on Sunday, the ODM leader accused President Ruto of encroaching upon the autonomy of county governments, alleging that the President had been undermining the principles of devolution. Raila cited the Affordable Housing Programme, contending that this initiative falls within the purview of devolved functions and should be managed by county governments, not the national government.

Addressing the subsidized fertilizer program, Raila emphasized, “Agriculture is a devolved matter. Counties should be allocated the resources to procure fertilizer and oversee its distribution.”

Furthermore, Raila criticized the President for inaugurating projects initially conceived and executed by county governments, intensifying the ongoing political discord between the two camps.
