In a bold move, Azimio coalition Members of Parliament (MPs) have declared their intention to bring the wheels of Parliament to a screeching halt if Deputy Minority Whip Sabina Chege is not removed. The opposition MPs are adamant about their demand for Sabina Chege’s replacement and are gearing up to paralyze parliamentary proceedings next week if their request is not heeded.
Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi expressed his frustration during a press conference at Parliament buildings, targeting Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula for what he perceived as deliberate obstruction of the Minority side’s operations within the House.
Wandayi accused Speaker Wetangula of leading them in circles and avoiding communication regarding the changes, which were decided upon by the Azimio coalition five months ago.
Wandayi issued a stern warning: “If the court order, issued on October 19, compelling the Speaker to allow Mark Mwenje to assume his duties as Deputy Minority Whip is not implemented, there will be a complete standstill in parliamentary proceedings on Thursday when the House reconvenes.”
Expressing his exasperation, Wandayi continued, “This endless cycle must come to an end. We are tired of being entangled in bureaucratic maneuvers. Meanwhile, those opposing the change are resorting to legal tactics to delay the inevitable. It doesn’t take a legal expert to see the games being played here.”
Wandayi highlighted the current dysfunctionality of the minority group, emphasizing that their work is hampered as Sabina Chege continues to occupy a position for which she no longer represents. He stressed, “Sabina Chege is receiving a salary for a role she is not fulfilling, leaving us handicapped in carrying out our responsibilities effectively.”
The Deputy Minority Whip position, originally designated for Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje, has faced legal challenges. However, a recent court ruling in Kiambu dismissed a case opposing Sabina’s removal, clearing the way for the long-awaited change.
The opposition has been at loggerheads with Speaker Wetangula due to his reluctance in implementing the necessary changes. Their frustration reached a boiling point when they even contemplated a vote of no confidence against the Speaker, highlighting the depth of their dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs.
