Outrage Erupts as Kenyan Family Compels Housegirl to Sit on the Floor at a Popular Nairobi Eatery

Disturbing images have recently emerged, causing an uproar on the internet, depicting a Kenyan woman sitting on the floor while her affluent employers indulged in a meal at one of Nairobi’s renowned restaurants. The incident was brought to light by a user on the social media platform X, who goes by the handle @kuntakitten.

While enjoying her lunch at the establishment, she couldn’t help but notice a woman, identified as a housegirl, forced to occupy the lowly position on the floor while her well-to-do employers enjoyed their meal comfortably seated.

Accompanying her post were two photographs that portrayed the hapless woman, adorned in what appeared to be her work uniform, sitting forlornly on the floor, with her hands clasped in her lap.

Expressing her evident displeasure, Kunta remarked, “You can easily gauge a person’s character by how they treat those who can do nothing for them… We were dining at Zen Garden, Nairobi, and we witnessed this family making their maid sit on the floor while they dined!”

Almost immediately, Kenyans on X joined in the chorus of condemnation, chastising both the restaurant for tolerating such behavior and the employers for their apparent discrimination and elitism. Many individuals questioned Kunta about the actions she took following the distressing incident, with some suggesting that she should have intervened and offered the housegirl a seat.

“Did you at least approach the management regarding this matter? Or inquire with the waitstaff about what was transpiring? Personally, I couldn’t just stand by and let this injustice persist. I would have promptly approached her and even confronted that family directly!” one user asserted.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of a similar controversy that transpired in 2018 when a domestic worker was denied the opportunity to dine at the Singapore Cricket Club. The incident ignited a heated debate across Singapore concerning the policies of private clubs and their treatment of domestic staff.
