President Ruto Appoints Renson Ingonga as Kenya’s New Chief Prosecutor

In a significant move, President William Ruto has officially appointed Renson Mulele Ingonga as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), signaling the beginning of a new era in Kenya’s legal landscape. The appointment, as announced in a Gazette notice dated September 20, grants Ingonga an eight-year term in this prestigious role.

Ingonga’s ascent to the position of DPP was met with resounding approval from Members of Parliament just a week before the official announcement. Lawmakers from across the political spectrum united in their praise for his impeccable integrity and undeniable suitability for the demanding responsibilities that come with the position.

Notably, Ingonga is no stranger to the realm of public prosecution. He previously served as the senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, where he oversaw the North Eastern region, showcasing his expertise in the field.

The newly appointed DPP boasts an impressive educational background, holding a Master’s degree in Law from the renowned University of Nairobi. He further honed his legal acumen with a Postgraduate Diploma in law from the prestigious Kenya School of Law, having obtained his initial Law degree from Moi University.

Ingonga takes the reins from his predecessor, Noordin Haji, who has now assumed the role of Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), marking a noteworthy transition within Kenya’s law enforcement and intelligence communities.

The selection process leading to Ingonga’s appointment was a meticulous one, overseen by a seven-member panel chaired by Solicitor General Shadrack Mose.

The panel had the arduous task of shortlisting 15 highly qualified applicants, including prominent figures such as former electoral commissioner Thomas Letangule, accomplished lawyers Taib Ali Taib and Danstan Omari, as well as other notable names like Tabitha Ouya, Victor Mule, Jacinta Nyamosi, David Ruto, Francis Andayi, Winston Ngaira, James Ndegwa, Peter Mailanyi, Lilian Okumu, Jacob Ondari, James Ndegwa, and David Okachi.

As Ingonga steps into his new role, there is a collective call for him to maintain the independence of his office and to resist any undue influence from the political class. This expectation underlines the crucial role of the DPP in upholding justice and the rule of law in Kenya.

With his stellar credentials and proven dedication, Renson Ingonga is poised to make a lasting impact as the country’s new Director of Public Prosecutions.
