President William Ruto has shed light on the rationale behind transforming the Nairobi National Agricultural Show into an international trade fair during the official inauguration of the Nairobi Trade Fair this Wednesday.
Ruto highlighted that this transition was driven by the paramount role agriculture plays in the nation’s economic vitality. “It is therefore imperative that we seize opportunities like this to engage a wider audience, spanning regions, continents, and the world,” he asserted.
The President emphasized the intricate interplay between agriculture, trade, and other sectors of the economy. He underscored the critical need for the country to transcend subsistence farming by embracing competitiveness, productivity, efficiency, value addition, manufacturing, and trade.
Ruto candidly acknowledged that the agricultural sector had stagnated, resulting in the high cost of living and elevated poverty levels. Furthermore, he noted that agriculture had faced formidable challenges, including extreme weather events, erratic climate patterns, and other adverse consequences of climate change.
He pointed out that Kenya had recently emerged from a grueling six-season drought, which had left a catastrophic trail of famine, undernourishment, crop and livestock losses, disrupted livelihoods, increased poverty, and diminished resilience.
Despite these formidable hurdles, President Ruto reassured Kenyans that the government would persevere, promising a forthcoming turnaround.
