In a significant turn of events, turmoil is brewing within the Nairobi County Assembly as UDA (United Democratic Alliance) MCAs (Members of County Assembly) are spearheading a movement to oust their current leadership.
A group of 35 MCAs, affiliated with President William Ruto’s UDA party, have passionately endorsed a call for the removal of Minority Leader Antony Kiragu and Minority Whip Mark Mugambi. The discontented MCAs assert that Kiragu and Mugambi have faltered in guiding party members on crucial legislative matters, necessitating a change in leadership.
Speaking from the UDA party headquarters, Kahawa West MCA Clement Kamaru, leading the dissatisfied faction, emphasized the urgency of this change.
“We have displayed immense patience with both the Leader of the Minority and Minority Chief Whip, but now, it is imperative to replace them for the benefit of our party and its members. Enough is enough,” declared Kamaru.
The MCAs accused Kiragu and Mugambi of prioritizing personal agendas over the welfare of the members, marginalizing women in leadership roles, and inequitably allocating opportunities to colleagues and residents.
Nominated MCA Joyce Kamau highlighted their concerns, asserting that it was time for UDA’s central leadership to appoint new leaders who genuinely champion the interests of the people.
“Under our Standing Orders, the only solution is to remove both Kiragu and Mugambi from office, allowing UDA to appoint new leaders who will restore sanity in the Assembly leadership,” affirmed the MCAs.
Responding to the allegations, Minority Leader Antony Kiragu dismissed the move as jealousy, asserting that his detractors were envious of his aspirations for a higher position within the UDA party. Kiragu also alleged that his rival had orchestrated bribery to orchestrate his ouster.
In a bid to address this escalating crisis, all UDA MCAs have been summoned to a crucial meeting at the party’s headquarters next week. Last year, UDA had appointed Antony Kirangu as Minority Leader, deputized by Waithera Chege, while Mark Mugambi assumed the role of Minority Whip, with Joyce Muthoni as his deputy.
The current impasse threatens to disrupt the balance of power within the assembly, with 85 elected members, 39 nominated members, and various party affiliations vying for influence. As UDA faces this internal challenge, the future political landscape of Nairobi hangs in the balance.
