The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) has secured a significant legal victory, as the High Court has issued orders to freeze assets and bank accounts associated with former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and his family. This legal maneuver comes as a result of the ongoing investigation into the Ksh588 million tender scandal in which the former county boss is embroiled.
In a pivotal development, the EACC has managed to obtain court orders freezing the family’s assets, collectively valued at nearly Ksh2 billion. These assets will remain frozen pending the outcome of the ongoing civil suit aimed at forfeiting them to the State. Concurrently, the High Court has identified eight other suspects, co-accused alongside Waititu, who will also face trial.
The charges brought against these eleven individuals revolve around a series of offenses allegedly committed during Waititu’s tenure as the governor of Kiambu County. They are accused of engaging in conflict of interest, illicitly acquiring public assets, and handling suspiciously acquired property.
The allegations suggest that the couple exploited their positions of power to award contracts to companies in which they held a vested interest, subsequently accepting illicit payments from these entities. Furthermore, they stand accused of engaging in money laundering activities.
It is important to note that, at this juncture, the trial remains ongoing, and no verdict has been reached. The gravity of the charges implies that, if convicted, Waititu and his wife could potentially face lengthy prison sentences.
However, it is essential to uphold the principle of the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law, a fundamental tenet emphasized by the EACC. Thus, the suspects are assured of a fair trial as they navigate through the legal proceedings.
