In a shocking turn of events, nine individuals employed by Njiwa Sacco find themselves in police custody, all linked to the mysterious disappearance of a staggering Ksh.160 million from the coffers of the savings society.
The group in question, comprised of personnel affiliated with the National Intelligence Service (NIS), fell under the investigative spotlight as a result of a joint inquiry conducted by a task force comprising detectives and intelligence agency officials.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed the identities of the detained nine as follows: Amos Kipchumba, the erstwhile internal auditor; Violet Wali, who held the position of loans manager; Caren Langat, the trusted accountant; Hamisi Zaunga and Miriam Nthenya, both distinguished system analysts.
Additionally, the roster includes Nicodemus Osiemo, a teller; Eric Rono from Sure-step Systems; Moses Ntoinya, an NIS officer alleged to have colluded with SACCO staff in the embezzlement; and Tony Wabomba, a former employee of the SACCO society.
These accused individuals, who have already been expelled from their roles within the SACCO, are scheduled to appear in court on Monday, September 25.
The charges levied against them are numerous and weighty, encompassing nine counts, including conspiracy to commit a felony, embezzlement by employees, false accounting, negligence, computer fraud, forgery, possession of counterfeit documents, and illegal access with the intent to perpetrate criminal acts, among others.
Furthermore, law enforcement is actively pursuing three additional suspects believed to have played a role in this intricate web of financial misconduct.
