In a recent development, the collapse of a residential building on Mirema Drive in Roysambu has led to the arrest and subsequent arraignment of an individual. Nairobi City County Acting County Secretary Patrick Analo revealed this information in a statement released on Tuesday, shedding light on the current status of the suspect in question.
According to Mr. Analo, the ill-fated building, intended for flat development and situated on LR no. 7960/80 within the Mirema Springs Estate along Mirema Drive, Roysambu Sub County, is registered under the ownership of Joseph Wakiri, as confirmed by their records. The tragic incident occurred around midnight on September 24, 2023.
“The contractor and developer responsible for this construction,” Mr. Analo stated, “has been apprehended and subsequently brought before the court. The individual was granted a cash bail of Kes. 500,000/- and is currently being held in remand at Nairobi West Remand Prison.”
Mr. Analo also revealed that the urban planning department of the Nairobi County government had initially approved the development application for this building. However, it has come to light that the developer proceeded in a manner contrary to the stipulations outlined in section 16 of the Building Code & Physical & Land Use Planning Act (2019).
“The developer had resisted previous attempts by authorities to arrest and bring them to court for alleged illegalities,” noted the County Secretary.
In response to this incident, the Nairobi City County Government has taken swift action to secure the site, collect samples, and submit them to the National Building Inspectorate (NBI) for testing. The results of these tests are eagerly awaited to shed light on the underlying causes of the collapse.
Furthermore, it has been established that there was no evidence of supervision from either an Architect or an Engineer throughout the construction process, adding to the concerns surrounding this tragic event.
