Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Professor Njuguna Ndung’u, shed light on the government’s reasoning behind providing paramilitary training to newly recruited Revenue Service Assistants, sourced from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
During his appearance before lawmakers, Prof. Ndung’u elucidated the necessity for disciplined training for these new revenue service assistants. He emphasized that this training was crucial because of the demanding nature of their responsibilities.
According to him, these individuals would need to maintain peak physical fitness while in the field and exhibit exceptional alertness in carrying out their duties.
“The service assistants underwent training encompassing technical skills, VAT exercises, and paramilitary training to enhance their physical fitness and vigilance. A total of 1406 recruits underwent a two-month training program at the KDF school in Eldoret before their deployment,” he stated. The Cabinet Secretary also revealed that health considerations played a role in this decision.
Ndung’u further asserted that this training would equip the servicemen with the skills needed to handle uncertainties that might arise during the course of their work. He explained that the government opted for the KRA to collaborate with the KDF for training, as this marked the program’s inaugural implementation.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), which deployed these service assistants across the country on Monday, has tasked them with supporting taxpayers in meeting their compliance requirements, including online registration and verification of taxpayer information.
Additionally, KRA personnel will gather data on behalf of the tax authority and ensure adherence to various regulations. The use of staff cards will serve to identify the revenue assistants, preventing any misuse of the program by unscrupulous individuals.
To verify the authenticity of a service assistant’s details, Kenyans can utilize the USSD code *572#.
