In a significant development, Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang Nyong’o has been entrusted with a pivotal role on the United Nations Advisory Council, focusing on local governance.
Governor Nyong’o, now in his second term, enthusiastically disclosed his recent appointment in a press release on Thursday. His commitment to serving with unwavering dedication is clear. The distinguished governor was handpicked by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to provide expert counsel on matters concerning the engagement and initiatives of local and regional governments.
In his advisory capacity, Governor Nyong’o’s insights will play a pivotal role in assisting Secretary-General Guterres and the UN Member States in making well-informed decisions concerning crisis recovery strategies, as well as in the effective implementation of international accords and benchmarks pertaining to sustainable development, gender equality, social inclusivity, and climate action, among a spectrum of other vital areas.
It is worth highlighting that this isn’t Governor Nyong’o’s inaugural foray into the international arena. He boasts a rich history of service on numerous international committees and boards, including the Africa Monitor, The Nelson Mandela Institute for Science Technology and the Advancement of Knowledge, and the UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration (CEPA).
Presently, he holds the esteemed position of Vice President of East Africa within the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA). Governor Nyong’o’s multifaceted international engagement underscores his steadfast commitment to global progress and diplomacy.
